Trenton, Georgia is a small city in northwest Georgia. It is the face of Dade County focused in the valley between two large mountains - Lookout Mountain and Sand Mountain - and extends up their slopes. Both mountains are legendary in folklore and country & western music. "The Independent State of Dade," like Texas, had its moment of independence. Before the Civil War, the county seceded from the state and the union, maintaining that status of independence until after World War II when the county was welcomed back into the union by President Truman. Like Texas, that independence underscores the attributes of county residents. In 2005, the Trenton Arts Council was formed. Unlike most arts councils, the Trenton Arts Council consists of artists rather than administrators, working in conjunction with the city to develop and promote public art. Unexpectantly, there has been a tremendous amount of community support. The arts council has a regular columnin the county newspaper. The council maintains several ongoing projects. The arts council presumes that we are members of the community and also are responsible for establishing community standards. The relationship to the community functionas as an aspect of the aesthetic sensibility and definition. In many ways, it has replaced the relationship to the museum.
